IntelliFlash™ Architecture

IntelliFlash™ is what makes Tegile storage arrays deliver game-changing performance and storage economics. It does this by optimizing flash and metadata placement with inline data reduction.

Traditional storage systems store data and metadata together, with metadata being interspersed with data on disks. Over time, with data being modified, deleted, and rewritten, metadata becomes very fragmented on disk. In addition, traditional data de-duplication also can cause metadata to multiply and grow rapidly.

As metadata grows it causes significant deterioration in a system’s behavior over time. With IntelliFlash™, Tegile storage arrays organize and store metadata, independent of the data, on dedicated high performance flash with optimized retrieval paths. This accelerates every storage function within the system, raising the performance of near-line SAS hard disk drives to the level of extremely expensive high-RPM SAS or Fibre Channel drives.

Tegile also built-in true unified access delivering multi-protocol support in all our arrays. Both block protocols (iSCSI and Fibre Channel) and file protocols (NFS, CIFS and SMB) are equally well supported. This makes it possible, for instance, to deploy Tegile arrays for virtualization as a Fibre Channel target to provide high performance. Low latency storage to the hypervisor, while simultaneously using the CIFS for user file shares.

This flexibility allows customers to deliver greater ROI on their investment by supporting multiple workloads from a single storage platform.

Optimized Hybrid Flash Storage

Along with using solid-state disks (SSD) to support IntelliFlash™, Tegile integrates DRAM and Flash intelligently into the data path to create an optimized hybrid storage system. DRAM is used as an extremely fast level 1 read cache; while Flash SSDs are used as a second level of non-volatile read and write cache. Unlike systems, which risk data loss by relying entirely on Flash for data storage, Tegile always protects user data by storing it permanently on hard disks, while using Flash and DRAM as high-speed cache.

Superior Data Protection

Tegile takes a holistic approach to data protection to ensure superior availability of business-critical data. Supporting multiple parity levels to help survive multiple disk failures is just the beginning Tegile arrays are designed from the ground up to deliver an intelligent system with no single point of failure. Tegile includes automated snapshot schedules for recovery points, fully redundant metadata storage and built-in multi-node data protection with automated replication. Furthermore, replication is designed to be highly efficient, since only the incremental changes since the previous replication are transmitted over the network to the standby array.
